The Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the "Mountains of the Moon," are a UNESCO World Heritage site straddling the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The range is home to some of Africa's highest peaks and most spectacular alpine landscapes.

The Alpine Lakes

Hidden among the peaks are several stunning alpine lakes, including Lake Kitandara, Lake Muhavura, and Lake Bujuku. These lakes are formed by glacial activity and are surrounded by unique Afro-alpine vegetation, including giant lobelias and groundsels.

How to Reach Them

Reaching these lakes requires a multi-day trek through challenging terrain. The most popular route is the Central Circuit, which takes 6-8 days and offers breathtaking views of the lakes and surrounding peaks. Guided treks are recommended, as the trails can be difficult to navigate and weather conditions are unpredictable.

What to Bring

  • Warm clothing (temperatures can drop below freezing at night)
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures
  • High-energy snacks and plenty of water
  • Camera to capture the stunning scenery

Conservation Efforts

The Rwenzori Mountains are home to a unique ecosystem that is under threat from climate change and deforestation. Visitors are encouraged to support conservation efforts by staying in eco-friendly lodges and following Leave No Trace principles.
