Before You Travel

Preparing for your Uganda adventure ensures you enjoy every moment—from wildlife encounters across the savannah plains and birding experiences in tropical forests to mountain hikes, cultural interactions, and relaxing escapes in Uganda's beautiful landscapes.

At Nkuruba Community Tours, we believe the best journeys begin with good preparation. With years of experience guiding travellers across Uganda, we share these essential tips to help you travel comfortably, responsibly, and confidently.

Uganda – The Pearl of Africa

Uganda is more than a destination, it is an experience. A land of ancient forests, endless savannahs, breath-taking mountains, vibrant cultures, and unforgettable encounters with nature.

From the misty forests of Bwindi and Kibale to the wildlife-rich plains of Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, Uganda offers authentic adventures where wildlife, landscapes, and communities come together.

Best Time to Visit

Low Season (Mar–May, Sept–Nov)

Lush landscapes, fewer visitors, and excellent value.

High Season (Jun–Aug, Dec–Feb)

Great safari conditions with comfortable travel and abundant wildlife.

Wildlife Experiences Like No Other

Encounter mountain gorillas in their rainforest home, track chimpanzees through ancient forests, cruise the Nile among hippos and crocodiles, and explore savannahs filled with lions, elephants, giraffes, and buffaloes.

With over 1,000 bird species, including the iconic shoebill stork, Uganda is a paradise for wildlife and nature lovers.

Culture That Connects You

Uganda's greatest treasure is its people. With over 45 cultures, every region offers unique traditions, stories, music, food, and ways of life.

Experience authentic connections through village visits, local experiences, traditional practices, and warm Ugandan hospitality.

Travel Documents & Entry Requirements

International visitors should arrange:

  • Uganda e-Visa before arrival through the official immigration portal.
  • Valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (required for entry).
  • Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, trip interruption, and adventure activities.

Pro Tip

We recommend keeping digital copies of important documents and having easy access to your travel information throughout your journey.

Understanding Uganda's Climate

Uganda's climate varies depending on the region and altitude. You may experience warm tropical conditions in savannah parks, cooler temperatures in mountain regions, and occasional rain showers in forests.

Pack clothing that can adapt to changing conditions:

General Safari Activities

  • Lightweight breathable clothing
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Light fleece or sweater for cool mornings and evenings

Rainforest Destinations

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hiking shoes or boots
  • Quick-drying clothing

Mountain Hiking

  • Warm layers
  • Thermal clothing
  • Good hiking boots
  • Waterproof outer layers

Packing for Uganda Wildlife Safaris

Uganda's national parks offer incredible opportunities to observe elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, and many other species.

For savannah safaris, we recommend:

  • Comfortable safari clothing
  • Neutral-coloured clothes for wildlife viewing
  • Binoculars
  • Camera equipment
  • Sun protection
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small backpack for day excursions

Tip

Early morning and evening game drives can be cool, so carrying a light jacket is always useful.

Preparing for Gorilla & Chimpanzee Tracking

Tracking Uganda's primates takes you deep into tropical forests where conditions can be challenging but rewarding.

Expect:

  • Uneven forest trails
  • Muddy paths
  • Dense vegetation
  • Humid conditions
  • Trekking durations that vary depending on the location of the animals

Recommended items:

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts
  • Garden gloves for extra grip
  • Gaiters for mud and vegetation protection
  • Rain jacket
  • Day backpack
  • Drinking water and energy snacks

Important Note

For gorilla trekking, hiring a local porter is highly recommended. Porters provide assistance on difficult terrain while directly supporting families living around Uganda's protected areas.

Preparing for Rwenzori and Mountain Hiking Adventures

The Rwenzori Mountains and Uganda's other hiking destinations offer spectacular experiences, but they require proper preparation.

Mountain conditions can include:

  • Cold temperatures at higher elevations
  • Rain and changing weather
  • Steep trails
  • Long walking days

For mountain adventures, pack:

  • Strong waterproof hiking boots
  • Warm layers
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Hiking socks
  • Gloves and hat
  • Backpack
  • Personal medication
  • Energy snacks

Pro Tip

A reasonable level of fitness and mental preparation will help you enjoy the journey.

Bird Watching Preparation

Uganda is one of Africa's top birding destinations, with over 1,000 recorded bird species.

Whether exploring forests, wetlands, lakes, or savannahs, birding requires patience and comfort outdoors.

Recommended items:

  • Good binoculars
  • Camera with zoom lens
  • Field guide (optional)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Neutral-coloured clothing
  • Sun protection
  • Notebook for recording sightings

Tip

Early morning is usually the best time for bird watching, so be prepared for early starts.

Health & Personal Wellbeing

Before travelling, consult your healthcare provider about recommended vaccinations and malaria prevention.

We recommend carrying:

  • Personal prescription medication
  • Malaria prevention medication
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Basic first-aid supplies
  • Medication for common travel discomforts

Pro Tip

Staying hydrated and resting properly will help you enjoy your safari activities.

Photography & Electronics

Uganda offers endless photography opportunities—from wildlife and landscapes to cultures and people.

Bring:

  • Camera
  • Extra batteries
  • Memory cards
  • Binoculars
  • Chargers
  • Power bank
  • Universal adapter

Tip

Many remote safari areas have limited charging opportunities, so preparing in advance is important.

Money & Payments in Uganda

Cash remains useful during your Uganda safari, especially when visiting rural communities, national parks, local markets, and smaller establishments.

We recommend travelling with:

  • US Dollars (USD) – preferably $50 and $100 notes printed in 2017 or newer
  • Euros
  • Ugandan Shillings

Important Currency Notes

  • US Dollar notes printed before 2017 are often not accepted.
  • Torn, damaged, stamped, or written-on notes may be difficult to exchange.
  • Ugandan Shillings are recommended for local markets, small shops, and community interactions.

Pro Tip: For currency exchange, larger US Dollar denominations ($50 and $100) generally receive better exchange rates than smaller notes. For shillings, we recommend carrying a combination of larger notes for exchange and smaller denominations for daily expenses.

While many hotels, lodges, and travel businesses accept major credit cards, having some cash available is highly recommended, especially when travelling in remote safari areas.

Respecting Local Communities & Cultures

Uganda's greatest treasure is not only its wildlife but also its people.

When visiting communities, we encourage travellers to:

  • Ask permission before taking photographs of people.
  • Respect local traditions and customs.
  • Dress appropriately when visiting villages and cultural sites.
  • Learn a few local greetings—it is always appreciated.
  • Support local businesses and community projects.
  • Be open-minded and respectful when experiencing different ways of life.

At Nkuruba Community Tours, our community experiences are designed to create meaningful connections between visitors and local communities.

To protect Uganda's natural heritage:

  • Follow your guide's instructions.
  • Maintain respectful distances from wildlife.
  • Avoid feeding animals.
  • Avoid littering.
  • Minimise plastic waste.
  • Respect park regulations.

Why It Matters

Responsible tourism ensures future generations can continue enjoying Uganda's incredible biodiversity.
