Gorilla Tracking in Uganda

Deep within the ancient rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, visitors have the rare opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas living freely in their natural environment.

Every trek is unique. Guided by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you will hike through dense forests, bamboo thickets, and mountain terrain in search of a habituated gorilla family. Depending on the gorillas' movements, the trek can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours.
Once the gorillas are located, you are allowed one unforgettable hour with the family. Watching a powerful silverback protect his group, playful juveniles tumbling through the vegetation, and mothers gently caring for their infants is an experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Gorilla Habituation Experience
For travellers seeking a deeper wildlife encounter, Uganda offers the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience in the Rushaga Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Unlike standard gorilla trekking, this experience allows visitors to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family while accompanying researchers, veterinarians, trackers, and Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers involved in the habituation process.
This remarkable conservation experience offers unique insights into gorilla behaviour, communication, feeding habits, and family dynamics while contributing directly to ongoing conservation efforts.

Chimpanzee tracking is one of Uganda's most exciting wildlife experiences. Walking through tropical rainforest while listening for the loud calls of wild chimpanzees creates an unforgettable sense of adventure.
Chimpanzees of Uganda
Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing approximately 98.8% of human DNA. Watching them communicate, hunt, groom, play, build nests, and care for their young offers fascinating insight into their highly intelligent social lives.
Led by Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides, small groups of no more than eight visitors trek through the forest searching for habituated chimpanzee communities. A typical tracking excursion lasts around 2–4 hours, including one hour spent observing the chimpanzees after they are located.
Visitors maintain a respectful distance of approximately 5–10 metres, helping minimize disturbance while enjoying excellent viewing opportunities.
Chimpanzee Habituation Experience
For a more immersive encounter, Uganda also offers the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience.
This half-day experience allows visitors to accompany researchers and rangers as they habituate wild chimpanzee groups to human presence. Since the chimpanzees are less accustomed to people, the experience is often more dynamic and unpredictable, providing an authentic glimpse into their natural behaviour.
Participants spend several hours in the forest following the chimpanzees as they feed, communicate, travel through the canopy, and interact within their communities.

Kibale National Park
Known as the Primate Capital of the World, Kibale National Park is Uganda's premier chimpanzee trekking destination.
Home to approximately 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 primate species, Kibale offers one of Africa's highest chimpanzee sighting rates—often exceeding 90%.
Budongo Forest
Situated on the southern edge of Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo Forest is renowned for its ancient mahogany trees and healthy chimpanzee population.
Its quieter atmosphere provides a more intimate trekking experience with fewer visitors while maintaining excellent chances of successful sightings.
Kyambura Gorge
Often called the Valley of the Apes, Kyambura Gorge lies within Queen Elizabeth National Park.
This lush tropical forest hidden beneath the savannah creates one of Uganda's most dramatic chimpanzee habitats. Trekking here combines spectacular scenery with the opportunity to see chimpanzees in a unique ecosystem.
Bugoma Forest
For travellers seeking a more off-the-beaten-path adventure, Bugoma Forest offers an exceptional community-based conservation experience.
Located between Hoima and Kagadi districts, this important rainforest covers approximately 410 square kilometres and supports more than 500 chimpanzees.
Gorilla & Chimpanzee Permits
Both gorilla and chimpanzee trekking require permits issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
Permit availability is limited each day to protect wildlife and maintain a high-quality visitor experience. Demand is especially high during the dry seasons:
Tip: The months of July and August are particularly busy, and permits often sell out several months in advance. To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking your safari at least 3–6 months before travel, especially if you plan to trek during peak season.
Best Time for Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking
Uganda offers excellent primate trekking throughout the year.
The dry seasons generally provide easier hiking conditions, while the rainy seasons offer lush green forests, fewer visitors, and exceptional photography opportunities.
