3-Day Rwenzori Nature Trek

3 Days / 2 Nights Moderate MOUNTAIN HIKING
3-Day Rwenzori Nature Trek

Not every Rwenzori adventure needs to reach the summit.

Sometimes, three days are enough to step into a world of misty forests, rushing rivers, giant heathers and spectacular mountain scenery.

This 3-Day Rwenzori Nature Trek is perfect for travellers who want to experience the beauty and unique ecosystems of the Rwenzori Mountains without climbing to the high peaks. Following part of the famous Central Circuit Trail, this journey takes you from the tropical foothills to the spectacular John Matte Camp (3,505 m), where you will enjoy stunning views towards Mount Stanley and the dramatic valleys of the Rwenzori.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rwenzori Mountains are often described as one of Africa’s most extraordinary natural landscapes. From dense montane forest to giant lobelias and alpine vegetation, every section of the trail reveals a new and unforgettable environment.

At Nkuruba Community Tours, we believe mountain journeys are about more than walking. They are about discovering nature, meeting local mountain communities and experiencing Uganda in an authentic and responsible way.

Whether you are an experienced hiker or simply seeking a unique adventure, this trek offers an unforgettable introduction to the legendary Mountains of the Moon.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,615 m) – Nyabitaba Camp (2,651 m)

Hiking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours

Your journey begins at the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gate in Nyakalengija, where you meet your guides and mountain crew before receiving a briefing about the trek.

The trail starts gently through local farmland before entering the lush montane forest of the Rwenzori. Following the Mubuku River and crossing the Mahoma River, the path gradually climbs through dense vegetation towards Nyabitaba Camp.

This forest is home to a variety of wildlife, and you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, colourful Rwenzori turacos and many other bird species along the way.

As the altitude increases, the first mountain views begin to appear, giving a glimpse of the adventure ahead.

Arrive at Nyabitaba Camp, where you can relax, enjoy a warm meal and spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

Overnight: Nyabitaba Camp

Day 2: Nyabitaba Camp (2,651 m) – John Matte Camp (3,505 m)

Hiking Time: Approximately 7–8 hours

After breakfast, descend through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, where the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers meet.

The trail then climbs steadily through bamboo forest and moss-covered landscapes before entering the unique alpine vegetation zone.

As you gain altitude, giant heathers, lobelias and groundsels begin to dominate the scenery, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in Africa.

Weather permitting, enjoy magnificent views towards Mount Stanley and Mount Speke from the Nyamileju area.

Continue across sections of bog and alpine terrain before arriving at John Matte Camp, beautifully situated with impressive views towards the higher Rwenzori peaks.

The constantly changing clouds and mist create a magical atmosphere, making this one of the most memorable camps on the mountain.

Overnight: John Matte Camp

Day 3: John Matte Camp (3,505 m) – Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija

Hiking Time: Approximately 7–9 hours

Wake up to fresh mountain air and, if conditions allow, enjoy one last look towards the surrounding peaks before beginning your descent.

Retrace your steps through the alpine zone, forest and river valleys as you return to Nyabitaba Camp for a lunch break.

Continue descending through the forest to Nyakalengija, where your trek officially ends.

Though the journey is short, the memories of the Rwenzori’s forests, rivers and mountain landscapes will stay with you long after you leave.
