Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Into the Mountains — Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Camp (1,615m – 2,651m)

Your adventure begins at Nyakalengija, where you meet your mountain crew before leaving the foothills behind. The trail winds through farmland before entering the ancient forest of Rwenzori National Park, accompanied by the sound of rushing rivers and the calls of forest birds and monkeys.

By afternoon, you arrive at Nyabitaba Camp, your first mountain home, where the rhythm of the Rwenzori begins: walking, discovering, sharing stories, and resting beneath the mountains.

Overnight: Nyabitaba Camp

Day 2: Following the Ridge — Nyabitaba to John Matte Camp (3,505m)

After breakfast, the trail descends to the Kurt Shafer Bridge before climbing steadily through bamboo and montane forest. The terrain grows more rugged as you gain altitude, with moss-covered rocks and thick vegetation confirming the Rwenzori's reputation as a true wilderness mountain.

At Nyamileju Rock Shelter, pause for views towards Mount Stanley and Mount Speke, weather permitting, before entering the strange and beautiful alpine world of giant heather, lobelias, and groundsels that surrounds John Matte Camp.

Overnight: John Matte Camp

Day 3: Into the Alpine World — John Matte to Bujuku Camp (3,962m)

Crossing the Bujuku River, you enter the remarkable Bigo Bog, where giant lobelias rise from the landscape and the trail winds through high-altitude vegetation. The pace slows, the air thins, and the views grow bigger.

Bujuku Lake eventually appears, surrounded by towering peaks, with Mount Baker and Mount Stanley dominating the horizon — one of the most memorable scenes of the trek. Tonight is a chance to rest and acclimatise before the higher elevations ahead.

Overnight: Bujuku Camp

Day 4: Towards the High Mountain — Bujuku to Elena Camp (4,541m)

Today you leave the familiar behind. The trail climbs steadily through the spectacular Groundsel Gully, surrounded by giant plants that seem to belong to another world, as the vegetation shrinks and the air turns colder.

Ahead lies Elena Camp, your base for the summit attempt. This is an important day for acclimatisation and preparation, with your mountain guides briefing you on the summit climb and checking equipment ahead of tomorrow's ascent.

Overnight: Elena Camp

Day 5: Margherita Peak — Summit Day (5,109m)

You wake before dawn, when the mountain is quiet and the sky is still dark. After a light meal and final preparations, you begin the ascent towards Margherita Peak, moving across steep rocky terrain and, depending on conditions, sections of ice and glacier, supported by your experienced mountain guides and technical equipment.

Step by step, you reach the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains at 5,109 metres — the culmination of days of effort, teamwork, and perseverance. After celebrating the summit, you descend carefully towards Elena before continuing over Scott-Elliot Pass to the beautiful Kitandara Lakes.

Overnight: Kitandara Camp

Day 6: Across the High Passes — Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Camp (3,261m)

Leaving Kitandara behind, climb towards Fresh Field Pass at approximately 4,282 metres, where the Rwenzori opens up around you and, on clear days, views extend towards the Democratic Republic of Congo.

From here, the journey becomes a long descent through changing landscapes, passing the historic Bujongolo Rock Shelter, associated with the famous 1906 expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi, before reaching Guy Yeoman Camp.

Overnight: Guy Yeoman Camp

Day 7: The Journey Home — Guy Yeoman to Nyakalengija

The trail descends through the lower mountain zones, passing through bamboo and forest as you gradually return towards the world you left a week earlier, accompanied by the Mubuku River along sections of the descent.

You have completed the Central Circuit, walked through one of Africa's most extraordinary mountain ecosystems, and stood at 5,109 metres on Margherita Peak. Your Rwenzori story ends here — but the memories are yours to take home.
